The problem

Nigeria does not lack health data. It lacks health data anyone can act on. Indicators sit in separate systems, collected by separate programmes, reported on different cycles — and the people who have to make budget and policy decisions with them are not analysts. They are administrators, commissioners and programme leads with a meeting in forty minutes.

MSDAT — the Multi-Sectoral Data Analytics Tool — existed to pull those indicators into one place. The question I was brought in to answer was how a non-analyst meets a national dataset without drowning in it.

What I did

Led the GIS mapping layer. I argued the entry point should be geography, not a table. A commissioner looking at their own state on a map understands the question before they understand the chart. The map became the front door.

Designed multi-indicator layering. Single indicators answer thin questions. Being able to put maternal mortality next to clinic density on the same geography is what turns a dashboard into an argument.

Moved from design into product management. I took the lifecycle of MSDAT 2.0 — scoping, sprint planning in ClickUp, coordinating data scientists, analysts, engineers and business, through release on web and mobile.

Built the ideation habit. Company-wide sessions in Miro and FigJam that pulled product ideas out of people who were never asked before — several shipped.

The hard call

Leading with a map is slower to build and heavier to load than leading with a table, on a platform where connection quality is not guaranteed. We took the cost because the alternative — a competent dashboard nobody could read quickly — was the failure mode we had actually seen.

What happened

  • MSDAT 2.0 shipped on web and mobile with measured usability improvement at release
  • Stakeholder approval of product direction rose materially across the 2.0 cycle
  • Deployed nationally; the GIS layer remains the platform’s entry point
